Sergio Carleo began playing violin at the age of eight. He was born in Valencia, Venezuela in 1994. He began his studies through el Sistema in 2002 taking lessons with Jorge Orozco for one year. During this time he was the concertmaster of the Youth Orchestra of Valencia. He participated in the Maurice Hasson National Violin Competition at the age of nine and was awarded with first prize. As a winner of the competition, he was invited by Maestro Jose Francisco Del Castillo to continue his studies. During the summer of 2005 he traveled to the United States to audition for the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and was accepted with a full scholarship and was the assistant concertmaster of the Tampa Youth Orchestra. After that summer, he returned to Venezuela to continue studying with Maestro Del Castillo for six years at the Latin American Violin Academy. During these six years he participated in several music festivals nationally and abroad soloing with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Quito, the Aragua Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Diego Matheus, Cristian Vasquez, Luis Miguel Gonzalez, Oswaldo Pajares, and Patrizio Izaga. He also participated in several master classes with prominent professors such as Marilou Churchill, Salvatore Acardo, Ronald and Almita Vamos, Donald Weilerstein, Julia Zaustinski, Glen Dicterow, Aaron Rosand, and Claudio Abbado. In 2010, after six years of studying with Maestro Del Castillo, he traveled to the United States to play for Maestro Albert Markov. Later that year, at the age of 15, Mr. Markov suggested he apply for the LISMA International Music Competition where he won the Grand Prix, receiving a full scholarship to the Long Island Conservatory to study with Albert Markov and a solo recital in the Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
