Greater Bridgeport Symphony Competition for Young Instrumentalists

The Greater Bridgeport Symphony Competition for Young Instrumentalists is sponsored by the Hersher Family Foundation, originally established by the Carlson Horn/Elstein Family in the early 1970's.

The Competition is open to all instrumentalists who are residents of or study in Fairfield or New Haven County, Connecticut, and are thirteen (13) through eighteen (18) years of age.

Among past winners who have gone on to successful solo careers (and continue to be GBS audience favorites) are Greenwich pianist Andrew Armstrong, the 1990 winner, who headlined the GBS' 2007 holiday concert, and the New York-based Russian-born violinist Alexander Markov (1981), who starred at the GBS' "Classic/Rock" benefit concert in 2006 and closed the GBS's 64th season in 2010. Another prodigy to emerge from the competition as a winner is Fairfield teenager Alex Beyer (2008), who made his GBS debut in November of 2009, performing Tchaikovsky's beloved Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. This high school student has subsequently performed with numerous orchestras and returned to Bridgeport last season (2011) to perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor. Another incredible student winner and prodigy is Anita Chen (2009) who has the rarest talent as a professional soloist on both the violin and the piano. Anita performed in October 2010 on both instruments amazing the audience. And a past winner of 1986 is the virtuoso Boston-based cellist Allison Eldridge who has performed 5 times with GBS.

We are thrilled to announce that all 5 of these past GBS Competition for Young Instrumentalists (formerly the Carlson-Horn Competition) will perform along with the 5 finalist conductor candidates in the 2013-2014 season for new Principal Conductor and Music Director of GBS.
