Young Instrumentalists’ Competition
Until 2019, GBS sponsored an annual Young Instrumentalists’ Competition for Connecticut residents age 13 through 19. This showcase of young talent has brought forth dozens of Connecticut’s most promising young musicians; the winner of the competition performs with GBS in concert. In 2019-20, three young musicians tied for first and each was to appear in concert; violinists Matthew Hill and Cameron Chase performed in September and Decembe 2019, and violist Sofia Gilchenok was scheduled to appear in March 2020, but the concert was cancelled due to Covid just 48 hours beforehand.
This competition had been on hold due to the Pandemic, but we hope to resume it in the 2023-24 Season.
Emerging Composer Competition
In 2017, a biennial competition for composers 32 years and younger was begun.
Six finalists were chosen for the 2019-2020 competition, but the pandemic prevented a final selection or a performance of a winning composition.
With generous sponsorship support from Trustee Doc Hermalyn and his wife Dr. Elizabeth Beirne, GBS will resume the competition in the 2023-24 season.
